A Walk

September 30, 2007

Jonathan, Allison and granddaughter, Rachel, were home for the weekend. On Friday morning Jonathan and I went to the woods and walked a couple of trails with thoughts of finding a ruffed grouse. We saw no grouse, but it was a great morning for a walk. There is still a lot of cover for the birds. A highlight of the morning was a walk into a cabin owned by a gentleman named Martin. He happened to be there and we had a nice visit. Martin has some birds that are comfortable around him and a Gray Jay came by for a handout. It flew down and sat on his and Jonathan’s hand for a treat.

Friday afternoon we fished the river for a while. It was breezy, but a nice afternoon to be on the water. Jonathan caught his limit; four walleyes and two sauger. Allison caught a nice walleye. I guess that Rachel and I were along for moral support.

Fall Colors

September 27, 2007

It’s the season for fall colors and Wednesday Diane and I took a ride. MN hwy 38 north of Grand Rapids was especially colorful with lots of gold, yellow, bronze and red mixed in with the green. If you have the opportunity, check out northern Minnesota’s fall colors.

Wild Berries

September 21, 2007

There are many different wild berries in northern Minnesota; probably the most common is the blueberry and chokecherry. There are also wild raspberries, strawberries, juneberries, pincherries and more. One that doesn’t get much attention is the low bush cranberry. It grows in the bog and it’s not real easy to pick because they grow individually. If there is any kind of a crop it’s worth picking a few, because they are nothing like you’d buy in the store. The cranberry sauce made to go with a turkey or wild bird is really special. There is a small bog close to Baudette that I checked the other day and there are not many berries; it may have been to dry this summer.

A Few Fish

September 18, 2007

Indications are that fall fishing has begun. Reports have the walleyes staging in front of the Lighthouse Gap and a few have followed the shiner run into the river. There is lot of activity on the river. The town of Rainy River has their annual walleye tournament this weekend and there are a number of boats out pre-fishing the tournament. Reports are that the best fishing is in 16-20 feet of water with jigs and shiners. I was gone for the weekend and was anxious to fish when I got home. Monday morning I went out for a couple hours and caught a small perch, a bullhead and two walleyes; one about 10″ and the other was 28″; nothing to bring home. That afternoon I fished for a little over an hour and caught two nice walleyes and two perch that I kept and release a couple small walleyes.

Labor Day Weekend

September 1, 2007

Fishing on the river is a little slow. We are getting enough to eat, but that’s about all. Friday evening, Bob, Sue and I caught five or six small saugers; kept one plus a real nice perch. Saturday morning, while Sue & Diane were doing the garage sale thing, Bob and I fished for a couple hours. Bob caught a nice 17″ walleye and we kept two other small ones. Bob also caught about a 25″ northern that we cut the line and released. That’s three or four northern caught in the last three days all in 18′ to 20′ of water. A few emerald shiners have showed up in the river the past couple of days; maybe a few walleyes will follow them in from the lake.
